September 20, 2015
Bellator light heavyweight champion, Liam McGeary picked up the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career last night on the Bellator 142 card in San Jose, California, defeating former UFC champion, Tito Ortiz via triangle choke in the very first round to send the veteran closer to retirement.
Liam McGearyOrtiz shot for a takedown, but it was mostly stuffed by McGeary, who went after a guillotine choke when he finally sat down to the ground. But Ortiz eventually popped his head out and tried to go to work on top.
He landed a punch there after McGeary attacked his left arm. Ortiz, a heavy underdog, kept McGeary’s back pressed against the fence and tried to work through the Brit’s defense. McGeary nearly had a triangle choke set up, but Ortiz slipped it and got to side control with eighty seconds left in the first.
He tried to pass to mount, but then had to defend an armbar attempt from the champ. He slammed his way out of it, but McGeary stayed after the submission and got a triangle choke. He squeezed as the clock ticked down, and Ortiz, from his knees, had no option but to tap.
