Cardio, Abs, and Year Round Conditioning
By John Doe

Why is it that all of these guys seem to have this mindframe that they are going to train abs and cardio for the summer, then let everything go during the fall/winter, or whenever? I just don’t understand this shit. I got into bodybuilding to be able to take my shirt off and look jacked!!

I’m not sure about you, but my goal was to never have to stay covered up because I accepted a gut in order to gain some strength. There is no reason you can’t be strong and defined. This flip-flopping between a low bodyfat and walking around like a fat-ass for half of the year is just retarded logic!! And what most guys don’t realize is that doing cardio can actually make you grow larger!!!

Cardio helps your muscles utilize more oxygen and therefore you can push the weight and reps even further.

Ab training

Ab training? Your abs are a muscle group aren’t they? Then train the damn things as such!! You should not neglect training your abdominals just because you are “bulking” or its winter time, or all of a sudden you’re a “powerlifter”, that is just dumb.

You don’t need to be killing your abs every day, but I think you should at least be hitting them twice a week minimum. I have a general rule I abide by, if doing sets of 25 on decline situps or leg raises becomes more difficult, I’m putting too much on my midsection and I either need to A) adjust the diet or B) start back training my abs a little more regularly.

Cardio

If you’re going to do cardio then God Damnit break a sweat!!! I’d much rather see someone hit a good 20-30 minutes of hard cardio than walk at a snails pace on the treadmill for 2 hours.

Some bodybuilders just crack me up, its always the same thing with some of these guys. They get all covered up in a hoodie like they think they are Rocky Balboa or Kai Green, and they just walk forever on a treadmill slower than fucking molasses. What a waste of time that is. You don’t need to be hitting it so hard you cannot breathe or say 2 words, but for God sakes at least break a sweat.

Don’t be afraid of jogging either. For some reason a lot of bodybuilders just don’t suggest jogging. I do not understand why? Jogging does what it should do, it raises the heart rate, you sweat, it releases endorphins that make you feel good, it increases your lung capacity, it burns fat!!!

For every guy out there who says jogging is bad, go look up Kevin Levrone or Cedric McMillan. Levrone always jogged, and Cedric has to jog with his job in the Army. Does it look like jogging ever hurt Levrone or Cedric? I think not, Levrone was a straight badass and Cedric is a monster!! Try jogging, ignore the common trend bullshit. Aside from jogging, the Stairmaster or walking or running stairs is also great cardio!!

A brisk walk on the treadmill is good too, now let me tell you how to make it better. Try this your next cardio session, elevate the treadmill to a steep incline, set your speed at 2.8 mph, no more than 2.8 mph. Now you walk, and DO NOT HOLD THE HANDLES!!! You won’t believe me until you try this, but 2.8 mph will light your ass up if you quit holding those damn handles!!!

So that’s it, keep these things in practice year round!! Is it really worth being able to bench press or squat another 30-40 lbs (in most cases the extra strength from having more body fat is very little and hardly worth it) if you feel insecure when you take your shirt off or are wearing a tank top?

How about that new girl you meet and try to bag? Do you think she is going to be saying “Damn you’re a fatass but you’re such a man being able to bench press 500 lbs”? FUCK NO!!! She is going to be thinking “So how fast will he run out of breath, here is for hoping anyways” and you don’t want that shit!!

Keep it lean and mean. Take the gains where you can get em’ but stay conditioned 24/7!!!!

I understand man but wishful thinking means HOPE and hope means DESIRE and desire means the will to NEVER TO GIVE UP.I wouldn't dare say I know what you are going through nor can I ever say how its not something that can make many a person quit. But I do know with firsthand experience from others that once you give up your life truly is over.I also know from those same individuals what a NO QUIT attitude can do to overcome insurmountable odds.I have seen time and time again, people go against what dr's and "so called" experts have told them about what they can never do again and do that and more.

DON'T GIVE UP BROTHER!!!! Its not about muscle, you are correct. Its about mind power and taking it one day at at time. Its not about what you once could do,its about what you can do now and the little goals you make for yourself to reach tomm and the next day.

I'm not giving up or I wouldn't have come this far.
But I also have to be realistic

Ok,so you have the right attitude. But may I ask you........WHAT IS REAL?? You say you have to be realistic. So whats real?? REAL is a relative term man. What real today may not be the reality of tomm. There are countless others that had the realty told to them by dr's only to make their own ideas of what can be done the true REALITY.

Don't let words like "realistic" be a negative term in your vocabulary.See it as an ever changing thing that you create.

Good post FIST. I agree with most of this. Most of the fellas here are a older crowd, so I think most of here on doing this in the healthiest way possible trying to stay leaner year around and keep cardiovascular system in check. I try to do cardio myself at least 5-6 a week for 30 mins moderate intensity, just enough in the tank so I can hit the weights.

Grim, for having 5 or so strokes buddy your damn lucky just to be walking and talking. Anyone familiar with strokes would know your a tough cookie. You got nothing to prove to us. Keep grinding out bro as best you can.

6 strokes including a collapsed brain stem. Fist I'm already a medical miracle. Hardly anyone lives from a collapsed brain stem, few who do are vegetables.

I was not supposed to live, talk, eat, move.

Much less be able to rep 315.

I've already come way past expectations and then some. It would actually be easier to have the bad side limbs cut off.. The weakness and spasms fight against me.

Trust me I'm way, way, way beyond expectations from busting my ass.

The head nuro in my state that saved my life is in awe, I'm used as inspiration and stories locally all the time. But I am realistic just like an amputees leg won't grow back my fucked side will never be 100%.

I'm still a ticking time bomb as my basal artery is collapsed still til this day.

And all that you've just stated is only more proof that reality is what you make it.You've proven to be what, in your very own words,so very few have been able to be.So for that alone you have achieved an amazing accomplishment and proved what will can do.APPLAUSE TO YOU SIR!!

The same drive and determination to live and succeed is the same that will keep you moving forward.Obviously the dr's didnt know what to do for you.All they could tell you was how bleak your condition was. You've smashed that ideology and done the improbable.I say "IMPROBABLE ,not impossible because I never believe anything is truly impossible.Too many people kill that belief and prove just how POSSIBLE the IMPOSSIBLE is.

You are one of those man.Take pride in knowing this and continuing to be an inspiration to so many.
