Former Porn Star Christy Mack Testifies About War Machines Steroid Use at Attempted Murder and Sexual Assault Trial
Former porn star Christy Mack (real name: Christine Mackinday) testified about former MMA fighter War Machine’s use of anabolic steroids at his trial on attempted murder, battery, kidnapping and sexual assault charges on March 8, 2017. Mack reported that War Machine (birth name: Jonathan Koppenhaver) used steroids throughout their relationship.
“I would watch him inject himself,” Mackinday said. “I knew he would take pills every once in awhile.”
During the trial, Mackinday stopped short of blaming steroids for War Machine’s brutal 2014 assault that gave Mack a shattered eye socket, missing teeth, lacerated liver, broken nose, busted lip and a serious leg injury. In an older interview on HBO Real Sports, Mack had previously claimed that War Machine’s behavior changed dramatically when he was on steroids as opposed to when he was off of the muscle-building drugs.
"I would see him shoot steroids into his arm really frequently," Mack said in an HBO Real Sports episode that aired on July 21, 2015. "I could tell the difference when he was using steroids and when he wasn’t."
Mack’s reluctance to directly blame steroids has not stopped others from making the “roid rage” connection.
For example, Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman was the first to make a direct connection between the assault and steroids. Chapman sought to capture War Machine after an arrest warrant was issued. Chapman couldn’t believe that War Machine was naturally a violent woman-beater and speculated that steroids must have transformed him into a monster.
“I think that there is some kind of drug, brother, that is involved, whether it be steroids or some other substance because I hope to God this guy isn't naturally like this,” Chapman said. “...Again, I've heard it's steroids, but whatever, he needs to get in prison, dry out and then maybe come out and be a referee or something.”
Brad Dryer, one of War Machine’s friends, predictably defended Koppenhaver and said he was really a compassionate and empathic person that was transformed into a woman-beater and rapist by steroids and antidepressants.
“Right now, if we went to prison, you would see the real Jon Koppenhaver,” Dryer told Brian Pia in an appearing on Bleacher Report. “The Jon that talks about Jesus Christ, the Jon that’s compassionate and concerned about people. It’s not because he was reformed in prison, it’s because he was on all that shit. He was on antidepressants, and he was on steroids. That’s a lot of the conversation.”
The truth of the matter is that the “roid rage” theory explaining why Koppenhaver violently assaulted his girlfriend is flawed. The average person fails to realize that correlation does not prove causation. Just because someone was using steroids when they committed a violent crime does not mean that steroids caused them to commit that crime.
But don’t be surprised to see both the prosecution and the defense try to utilize the “roid rage” theory for their own purposes at the War Machine trial this month.
