more courts have started to rule that an ip address alone doesn't id a specific user. It's about time too. Sending mass lawsuits based on ip when they can't even verify that the intellectual property was stolen (maybe you bought it and just need a digital copy, or have a netbook with no cd drive, etc)
In such cases the plaintiff needs to have some other corroborating evidence.
Of course big $ is fighting these sort of rulings every step of the way.

yeah this is great for file sharing, but i don't see how it helps in other areas.

ip alone don't convict you, but it gets the search warrant for example.
