If you’re chasing an upper-chest pump thinking it’s going to impress your lady or gym crush, think again. A study published in Evolutionary Psychological Science found that men tend to stare at the upper-chest of other men longer than women do. In other words, your bro is more likely to compliment your s-pec-tacular chest than your girlfriend.

“Eye movements showed that men viewed the chest region of other men” longer than women did, according to the study.

The study looked at whether men and women preferred a higher or lower shoulder to hip ratio, with a higher ratio being someone with broad shoulders and a narrow waist.

Eighty-two heterosexual men and women were asked to look at and rate the attractiveness of three male and three female 3D models, with varied in shoulder-to-hip ratios. As they evaluated the models, their vision was tracked by the researchers.

There were significant differences in what men and women found attractive. Men spent more time staring at the chests of the models with higher shoulder-to-hip ratios, while women showed no differences in their attention to the males’ chests.

Researchers also suggested that men consider other men with a high shoulder-to-hip ratio to be stronger than those with a lower ratio

“Men are more concerned with men’s upper bodies, suggesting they desire more masculine body forms for their mating success as well as in making the assessment of other men’s formidability,” Farid Pazhoohi, a psychologist based at the University of British Columbia and the corresponding author of the study told the website PsyPost.
