MONTGOMERY - A township doctor, who had medical offices in Asbury Park and Brooklyn and is already serving time in New York for his participation in a multimillion-dollar medical insurance fraud scheme, was sentenced Monday in federal court to 27 months in prison for illegally prescribing steroids and having more than eight pounds of marijuana.

Kevin Custis, 54, of Meadow Lark Lane in the Belle Mead section, was sentenced by federal court Judge Peter Sheridan in Trenton. In addition to the prison term, Sheridan sentenced Custis to three years of supervised release and fined him $10,000.

Custis is also serving seven years in a New York State prison after convictions of enterprise corruption, health care fraud, grand larceny and scheme to defraud.

New Jersey has already revoked Custis' medical license.

The federal charges against Custis stem from a multi-agency investigation conducted by the Division of Consumer Affairs’ Enforcement Bureau, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency and others.

Custis was convicted of writing and delivering numerous prescriptions for various types of anabolic steroids to two patients, who were undercover investigators, in 2016 and 2017.
