A few hours ago, The Intercept published the latest bombshell revelations from whistleblower Edward Snowden: British and U.S. spies illegally hacked the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cardsto steal encryption keys used to protect the privacy of cell phone communications across the globe.
To get a better sense of what this actually means, take a second to read this passage from the article today:
“With these stolen encryption keys, intelligence agencies can monitor mobile communications without seeking or receiving approval from telecom companies and foreign governments. Possessing the keys also sidesteps the need to get a warrant or a wiretap, while leaving no trace on the wireless provider’s network that the communications were intercepted.”
Spy agencies like the NSA are literally just hacking into phone companies and and stealing information so they can constantly monitor ALL OF US without any oversight or checks and balances to protect civil liberties and free speech.
