This is all part of the refs instructions to the fighters when they both approach him in the beginning of the fight, the refs says specifically to protect yourself at all times! If a fighter drops his guard, turns around, looks away, or otherwise leaves himself unprotected during the fight he is fair game to be hit and the hit is counted and legal.
