A study (1) had a conclusion: “The combination of honey and coffee can be used as an alternative medicine in the treatment of persistent postinfectious cough (PPC)”.

In the study, 97 adults who had PPC for more than 3 weeks were divided into three groups.

The first group received a jamlike paste made from coffee and honey, second group received a steroid medication (prednisolne) and the third group received a non-steroidal cough syrup (guaifenesin).

The participants were told to dissolve a certain amount of their product in warm water and drink once every 8 hours for a week. Cough frequency was measured during this week.

Study results showed that the group who took the honey and coffee mixture had the greatest decrease in cough frequency.

The conclusion of the study: A combination of honey and coffee can be used as an alternative medicine in the treatment of PPC.

According to the researchers,

Each year, billions of dollars are spent on controlling and trying to cure cough while the real effect of cough medicines is not quite reliable. Even though PPC is reported to account for only 11–25% of all cases of chronic cough and it is not associated with disability and mortality, it can cause morbidity and is responsible for medical costs.

Honey and coffee are natural edible substances that are safe, agreeable, less expensive than medicines, and easily available.

Honey, lemon juice and coconut oil


3 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup raw honey
2 tablespoons coconut oil


Put the ingredients in a saucepan and heat over low heat until the coconut oil melts. Take a spoonful of this syrup when it’s warm.

Homemade cough syrup with honey and onion is also very effective. It’s also great for treating cold too.
