Testosterone levels are dropping and so are male fertility rates. Here's a natural way to increase T and protect your swimmers.

Statistically, your balls aren't what they used to be. They're producing fewer sperm and less T than your daddy's balls.

In 1992, a study reported a global decline in semen quality (fertility) between 1938 and 1990, and there's no sign of abatement. Other studies found that sperm counts are sinking and that average testosterone levels have dropped. One study found that the average 60-year-old American man in 2004 had testosterone levels 17% lower than a 60-year-old man in 1987. And younger men aren't safe either.

The Study on Young Men​

Most health-conscious people use fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation, which is intimately connected with at least 100 diseases and conditions (even things like anxiety). However, this is the first study to look at the association of omega-3 fatty acids with semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in healthy young men.

Danish scientists studied 1679 men and found some startling associations between fish oil intake and various male reproductive metrics. All of them were 18 to 20 years old. Ninety-eight reported using fish oil supplements in the preceding three months: 53 reported taking it for 60 or more consecutive days. All were required to complete extensive health, lifestyle, and diet questionnaires and take a ton of intimate measurements and blood tests.

What The Study Found​

The men who took fish oil had larger testicles, greater semen volume, and higher sperm counts than those who didn't use fish oil supplements. The fish oil group also had lower LH levels, higher free testosterone (8%), and a lower free testosterone to LH ratio than non-users (that's a good thing).

The results were also dose-dependent. Those who used fish oil supplements for longer than 60 days showed greater improvement than those who took omega-3 supplementation for fewer than 60 days.

Part of the effects had to do with how fish oil might be associated with increased FSH sensitivity of the Sertoli cells, which are the "nurse cells" of the testicles that aid in sperm production. They also theorized that the "lower LH levels and higher free testosterone to LH ratio indicate a better Leydig cell capacity in line with a positive association with fish oil intake."

Another benefit is structural but important. The sperm membrane is made up of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) but primarily DHA, one of the two main omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. By adding more DHA, you're like a stonemason slapping on mortar to thicken a wall. As a result, you get increased sperm motility and concentration, along with a lot more healthy sperm.

Here's What to Do​

Supplementing with fish oil leads to better reproductive health – higher testosterone levels, bigger, more robust testicles, and an increase in the quantity and quality of sperm, not to mention all the other good things associated with fish oil.
