UFC Veteran Accepts Suspension

Two-time UFC veteran Matheus Nicolau has accepted a suspension of one year for a violation of anti-doping policy of the UFC in relation to a planned bout at this past November’s UFC Fight Night 100.

Nicolau had been preparing for a flyweight fight against Ulka Sasaki (19-3-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 100 on November 19 in his home country of Brazil. He was however notified of the positive test five weeks before the bout. Nicolau remarked the levels of Anastrozole in his system were not consistent with someone looking for a performance advantage, but instead of someone who had taken a contaminated supplement.

The UFC veteran claimed innocence and said he did not knowingly ingest Anastrozole. Nicolau also remarked he is planning to have all his supplements tested. The B sample of Nicolau also tested positive for the same substance. The UFC veteran said he is hoping for a shorter suspension than the standard year-long variety for first-time offenders.

Anastrozole (also known as Arimidex) is medically used for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. The non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor is used by professional athletes and bodybuilders as part of the
steroid cycles for controlling estrogen levels.

In November, Nicolau had remarked he is hopeful that we will be able shorten it, since we have everything in our favor. He added the way that everything happened is consistent with not having used this substance with performance-enhancing purposes but he also try not to create expectations to avoid frustration.

Nicolau was a bantamweight contestant on Season 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” on which he was eliminated by eventual finalist Dileno Lopes. He will be eligible to fight again in October. Nicolau was invited to the season’s live finale and earned a submission win over Bruno Korea and made a return to action at The TUF 23 Finale, and picked up a split-decision win over John Moraga.

It was announced by the United States Anti-Doping Agency that Nicolau (12-1-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has accepted a doping ban of one year. This was after he tested positive for Anastrozole, a banned substance in the hormone and metabolic modulators category. The suspension of Nicolau began on October 13, 2016, which is the date his positive sample was collected.

The Brazilian mixed martial artist who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship currently competes in the flyweight division. Nicolau started training in different forms of martial arts before transitioning to mixed martial arts in 2010. He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in August 2010 at the age of 17 and went on to compile a record of 10-1-1 before trying out for The Ultimate Fighter in early 2015. He made his official debut for the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC Fight Night 77 on November 7, 2016 where he faced fellow cast mate Bruno Rodrigues. Nicolau won the fight submission in the third round and later won the fight via split decision against John Moraga on July 8, 2016 at The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale.
