Why has everyone switched to protonmail, is it really that safe?

I mean maybe this is a stupid question, but everyone used to use countermail, anonymousspeech, securenym.

Then this "free" protonmail came along, and bam! everyone all of sudden uses it.

I mean what the what?
why?
becuz it's free?

Maybe "free" isn't really free, maybe it's a LE scam!

Yeah, but being in Switzerland is no guarantee of anything because of treaties to cooperate on criminal matters.

When talking about something of which the consequences could be so dire, it seems to me the safest bet is to go with a secure email provider that has been around forever, and not relinquished anyone's info, as opposed to this new "free" protonmail.
I still don't get it.

Any other sources care to reply as to why they have chosen the new, "free" one?
Are there any creditable reviews for protonmail online that justify all the sources using them?

yes its that safe, SSL based with personal PGP on top, so opening the mailbox is separate from reading the mail, as most know who have logged on.

Switzerland is a pretty safe bet in terms of their cooperation with US. Roman Polanski fled the US to Switzerland in 1978 after being found guilty on a charge and Switzerland refuses to extradite him back to face sentencing, it's been 40 years. So I would say if it's Switzerland your dealing with it would take alot to get them to fork over anything to the US.

Another problem is that in order to use protonmail you have to use google chrome, and as everyone knows google tracks EVERYTHING!

Some bros were using proton to buy Meditrope from the man himself and quite a few got scammed using this email specifically. Some how the scammer was able act as the source and collected fund sent for the gh. Hard lesson learned.

With so many using gmail and Yahoo these days, I almost feel it the safest due to the shear numbers of accts and email exchange on these on a daily basis plus it doesn't stick out like a so called secure email server does.

I have never used Google chrome, I didn't even know you could use it without a chromebook!! I use a bunch of different browsers.

you can still encrypt
they have proggies to look for words, patterns etc
non ecrypted uber bad

Actually, what I meant to say is that you can't 'sign up' without using chrome, as far as I can tell.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

because as i stated its not only SSL like most other, it adds a layer of PGP so only the owner can read mail. Most "secure mail" is only SSL, that means an admin could see the data at rest if they wanted to. Not so on proton mail since each users data is encrypted with a personal key

others use more than ssl
countermail fro what i remember could be wrong is ssl, diskless os, zero ip, pgp and encrypted drives to start
yes each user having personal keys and not being on the server is key
